LIHEAP
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program is funded by the US Department of Energy (DOE). The Florida Department of Community Affairs allocates these funds to local CAA and other agencies.
Low-income families are eligible for up to $750 in assistance per year, based on priority of need, toward their utility obligations.
During the 2004-2005 year, $815, 259.00 in direct utility assistance was provided to 1,894 low-income families in our communities to either establish, or prevent termination, of utility services. Of the 1,894 families served by our LIHEAP program, 60% were fixed-income households receiving Social Security of Supplemental Social Security; 26%were wage-earning households, and 14% were either no income (except from child support or a child SSI), general assistance, or other sources of income. 48.48% of our LIHEAP-served clients were children under the age of 18, and coordinate energy audits on homes with high utility bills. LIHEAP families are connected with our Weatherization Assistance Program to help lower utility bills.
